
HV/MV Project Manager

Position Overview
The HV/MV Substation Project Manager is responsible for leading the planning, execution, monitoring, and delivery of high-voltage and medium-voltage substation and grid infrastructure projects supporting renewable energy developments. This role combines technical expertise with strong leadership and project management capability to ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and to the highest technical standards.

Key Responsibilities
Project Planning & Execution
Lead the full lifecycle of HV/MV grid connection and substation projects from design and procurement through construction, commissioning, and handover.
Develop and manage project schedules, budgets, risk registers, and quality plans in line with contractual and regulatory requirements.
Coordinate with engineering teams to ensure technical designs meet ESB standards, industry codes, and client expectations.
Oversee procurement of HV/MV equipment, switchgear, transformers, protection systems, cables, and all subcontracted services.
Ensure alignment with ESB standards, HSE legislation, CDM Regulations, and ISO quality systems.
Technical Oversight
Provide technical leadership on HV/MV substations (10kV/20kV/38kV), protection schemes, transformers, switchgear, SCADA, and control systems.
Review and approve electrical designs, SLDs, protection settings, equipment specifications, and construction methodologies.
Ensure compliance with IEC, IEEE, national grid standards, grid codes, and connection agreements.
Support site teams with troubleshooting, commissioning activities, FAT/SAT testing, and energization processes.
Interface with ESB Networks and renewable developers to secure grid connections and approvals.
Project Coordination & Stakeholder Management
Manage communication with clients, contractors, suppliers, and internal teams.
Lead progress meetings, track KPIs, and present project updates to senior management and stakeholders.
Manage subcontractors to ensure delivery aligns with the project schedule, quality standards, and contractual requirements.
Coordinate planning, environmental approvals, and statutory permitting.
Quality, Health & Safety
Ensure strict adherence to HSE policies, site safety requirements, and ESB safety standards.
Oversee quality inspections, documentation control, and commissioning protocols.
Promote continuous improvement, digital innovation, and sustainability throughout project execution.
Financial Management
Manage project expenditure, monitor cost performance, and forecast cost-to-complete.
Oversee preparation of variations, claims, and contractual documentation.
Support timely invoicing and project cash-flow management.

Required Qualifications & Skills
Education & Certifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or related field.
Chartered Engineer (CEng) or equivalent is an advantage.
Project management certification (PMP, PRINCE2, APM) preferred.
Technical Skills
Strong understanding of HV/MV substations, protection systems, and grid integration.
Experience with system studies, grid codes, and connection agreements.
Proficiency in project scheduling tools such as MS Project or Primavera.
Familiarity with EPC workflows, substation construction methodologies, and commissioning processes.
Experience
10+ years’ experience in HV/MV grid infrastructure or substation projects, with at least 5 years in a project management role.
Proven track record delivering renewable energy grid connection or substation EPC projects (wind, solar, BESS).
Experience managing multidisciplinary teams, contractors, and complex stakeholder interfaces.
