
HV/MV Project Engineer

Position Overview
The HV/MV Project Engineer supports the delivery of high-voltage and medium-voltage substation and grid infrastructure projects for renewable energy developments. The role focuses on providing technical expertise, engineering coordination, and site support throughout project lifecycles from design through construction and commissioning. The Project Engineer works closely with the Project Manager, design team, and site personnel to ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, and in accordance with ESB standards, industry regulations, and client requirements.

Key Responsibilities
Project Engineering
Support the delivery of HV/MV grid connection and substation projects from design through construction and commissioning.
Assist the Project Manager with planning, scheduling, and coordination of engineering activities.
Prepare and review technical documentation including method statements, risk assessments, and procedures.
Support procurement activities including preparation of technical specifications and review of supplier documentation.
Coordinate engineering deliverables with design consultants and contractors.
Technical Support
Provide technical support on HV/MV substations (10kV / 20kV / 38kV), transformers, switchgear, and protection systems.
Review electrical drawings including Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), protection schematics, cable schedules, and layouts.
Lead design reviews to ensure compliance with ESB standards, IEC standards, and grid code requirements.
Lead coordination of factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), and commissioning activities.
Assist with troubleshooting during installation, testing, and energisation phases.
Site Coordination
Provide engineering support during construction and installation activities.
Coordinate with subcontractors and site teams to ensure work aligns with approved designs and specifications.
Monitor installation quality and resolve technical issues arising on site.
Ensure inspection test plans (ITPs), commissioning documentation, and as-built drawings are completed.
Stakeholder Communication
Liaise with internal engineering teams, contractors, suppliers, and ESB Networks.
Participate in project meetings and provide technical input.
Assist with management of technical queries (TQs) and requests for information (RFIs).
Support coordination of grid connection requirements and approvals.
Health & Safety
Ensure engineering and site activities comply with company HSE policies and ESB safety standards.
Support preparation of risk assessments, method statements, and safety documentation.
Promote safe working practices and continuous improvement on projects.

Required Qualifications & Skills
Experience
5+ years experience in HV/MV substations, grid infrastructure, or power system projects in Ireland or Europe.
Experience working to ESB technical standards and coordination with ESB is required.
Experience working on renewable energy grid connections within Ireland (wind, solar, or BESS) is advantageous.
Exposure to substation construction, testing, and commissioning activities.
Experience coordinating with multidisciplinary engineering teams and contractors.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or related discipline.
Working towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or equivalent is desirable and will be supported by employer.
Skills
Strong understanding of HV/MV substations and grid connection infrastructure.
Familiarity with ESB standards, IEC standards, and electrical design documentation.
Strong organisational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work effectively with project teams, contractors, and clients.
