What It Is and Why It Matters for Businesses
If you are a business owner or manager looking for ways to reduce your energy costs and improve your environmental performance, you might want to consider behind the meter (BTM) energy generation.
What is behind the meter energy generation?
Behind the meter refers to an energy system’s position in relation to your electric meter. A BTM system provides power that can be used on-site without passing through a meter, while a front-of-meter system provides power to off-site locations. The power provided by a front-of-meter system must pass through an electric meter before reaching an end-user.
A BTM system can be any renewable energy generating facility that produces power on site, such as solar PV, wind turbines, biomass boilers, or combined heat and power (CHP) units. As the power is being generated by the business, not produced on the side of the grid, it is referred to as ‘behind the meter’.
